‘The Cost of Cruelty: What Australia’s Refugee Policies Costs You’

A new study by Save the Children, Australia and UNICEF has shown that billions of our tax dollars are spent to maintain Australia’s cruel refugee policies. A fraction of the vast sums involved could, if directed away from the current policy of deterrence, create much better conditions for asylum seekers and provide permanent resettlement solutions for refugees. Moreover, these funds could be used on health, education and other areas to improve the lives of ordinary people in Australia.

Speakers: Lisa Button and Shane Evans, Save the Children, Australia and Dr John Minns, Associate Professor, Politics and International Relations, ANU and Refugee Action Committee, Canberra

30th October Rally: It’s time – #Bring Them Here: #Close Manus & Nauru
On Sunday October 30 rallies will be held around Australia to call for the people locked up in Australia’s detention centres in Nauru and Manus Island to be brought to Australia and for the centres to be closed. After spending more than three years incarcerated in these camps, the situation facing these people is intolerable and the Australian government must act now to end this cruel treatment – enough is enough! Join the thousands of Canberrans who will rally in Garema Place at 1pm on Sunday 30th October to demand justice for these people. Organise or join a contingent to march together at the rally.
Put the date in your diary and keep an eye out for more information about this event and activities you can be involved in to help build for it.
